Texas US Rep. Kay Granger in senior living facility: reports

  • Rep. Kay Granger, R-Texas, has missed votes in D.C. since July
  • Dallas Morning News reports her son said Granger has ‘dementia issues’
  • She has received backlash online since the news came out

U.S. Rep. Kay Granger, R-Texas, is reportedly staying at Tradition Senior Living in Fort Worth, where she is part of the independent living community. Her son, Brandon Granger, told the Dallas Morning News that she selected the facility for its lively and engaging environment, despite reports raising concerns about dementia.

Kay Granger, the first Republican woman from Texas to serve in the U.S. House of Representatives and Fort Worth’s first female mayor, announced last November that she would not seek re-election. She stepped down from the House Appropriations Committee in March and has not participated in congressional votes since July 24, according to her roll call vote record.

Brandon Granger clarified that while his mother has been dealing with memory issues since late last year, she is not in memory care. Instead, she lives in a community offering activities like social engagement, exercise, and active living, which he described as “perfect for her at this stage of life.”

In a statement to The Hill, Kay Granger acknowledged facing health challenges over the past year, noting they have made traveling to Washington, D.C., “both difficult and unpredictable.” She thanked her constituents and colleagues, calling her time in public service “the honor of a lifetime.”

Her prolonged absence from Congress has drawn criticism online, with Democratic Rep. Ro Khanna calling for term limits and campaign finance reforms to open opportunities for a new generation of leaders.

Kay Granger’s groundbreaking career as a leader in Texas politics concludes a historic chapter of public service as she transitions into this new phase of life.
